The End of Interactive Whiteboards?

Not only can you control your White Board through any of the free VNC apps available, but you can also draw on the whiteboard as if it were like any of the expensive Interactive Boards that are out there.

Now teachers and students can draw on the whiteboard from anywhere by using an iPad, freeing everyone from being tethered to the whiteboard.

All we do is install a program called Ink2Go (which is currently free on trial) onto the whiteboard computer, connect to it through VNC on the iPad and hey presto.....an interactive whiteboard from your iPad.

Your 3 favourite Apps?

Go on tell us what your 3 favourite apps are.......

Me it's

Dropbox
Being able to have all the documents I need on either my computer, iPad or iPhone makes it so easy to access and edit anything, anywhere, at any time.
Also I can share pictures and documents, so students can access them on the school iPads.

Kindle
First chapters of nearly any book for free.
Enough said.........other than can also buy lots of books for cheaper than half price.
And I can read in bed without the light on.....wow....isn't technology wonderful.

Brushes
Even I can almost look like a proper artist
Problem is that Beth keeps pinching the iPad, just so she can apparently do some more Art coursework.
By the way this is her artwork on Brushes.....not mine.

iPad - The end of interactive whiteboards?

I teach in a room with 32 computers arranged in 3 island rows. So my interactive whiteboard is 4' above the ground so the pupils at the back of the class can see therefore the top is an un-useable 8' away from the ground. Even Max in my tutor group (6' 8") [Edit Max tells me he is now 6'8" and a half] might find it a tad difficult to reach.

Solution?

Ditch the IWB and use my iPad to interact with the screen.

The two apps I use are;

The Real VNC
Allows the board to be controlled from any part of the room by me or the students. I can ask them to write text onto presentations or complete tasks without thinking about their height to reach my board.

Air Sketch
This is a great app which display what ever you do on the iPad on the projector using Firefox. It just uses HTML5. Annotate PDF's, images, screen shots of the iPad. It's a good bit of kit!

So with these two apps (£10) I can do all that my IWB (£800). So is this the end?

Real VNC, HTML 5 and Differentiation

After Mr Jamiesons post about using AirDisplay I used that idea and gave a pupil my iPad with the presentation running on VNC to my desktop machine (I have extended desktop turned on) so one pupil had the slide they needed the rest of the class could see their task. So the iPad allows effective differentiation.

Real VNC is rather nifty in that it allows you to left click and other functions that other VNC clients do not.

HTML 5 - It's the bees knees if you listen to Steve Jobs! But it will do everything that Flash currently does and more. Flash has never been and will probably never be supported by IOS devices but with this announcement by Adobe the answer might just be around the corner!

Another point about HTML 5 is that you need to use Firefox, Safari or IE 9 (Beta). It's just so new! Here is a nice example of what it can do.

How I have been using the iPad

I have downloaded DropBox onto the iPad and my laptop. I prepare my lesson plans elctronically and save them in 'DropBox' on my laptop.

With the wireless connection, they are synchronised immediately with the iPad, so I can view and use them straight away.

Using the VNC app, I can control the main PC. I did struggle initally with moving the mouse (if you drag your finger, it moves the screen on the iPad, rather than move the mouse on screen). However, I discovered that if you double-click the 'window' icon (bottom RHS) it locks the screen so as you drag your finger, the mouse moves.

Video science

The iPad app of video science is proper good. Not only do you get videos of experiments and textbook descriptions, but it is FREE and simple to use. Definitely one for you Barry.

Great video app

OPlayer HD lite is free and can play all video types (including .wmv).  It even allows you to copy video files to your ipad over wifi.
